I have been hoping to switch to a more natural approach for cleaning my home, so I was thrilled when I was given the opportunity to review The Organically Clean Home: 150 Everyday Organic Cleaning Products You Can Make Yourself–The Natural, Chemical-Free Way, the latest book by writer, blogger and cleaning expert, Becky Rapinhuck of Clean Mama.
The book is filled with easy to make recipes for all-natural, organic, homemade and DIY cleaning products that are safer and cheaper than the pre-made cleaning products that you buy at the store. What I really like about Becky’s book is that these homemade green cleaning products can be made with normal household supplies that you usually have on hand (like vinegar, soap and lemons) and that you can clean while your family is around without subjecting them to harsh and unhealthy chemical fumes.
There are some organic products that you will have to purchase to make Becky’s homemade cleaning products — things like essential oils and all-natural soap, but these are supplies that you will want to stock up on anyway if you are making the transition to a greener, healthier home.
All Natural Bathroom Cleanser
Among the first of Becky’s recipes that I’d like to try is her lemon and peppermint tile cleaner. When I clean my home’s showers, I usually use a store-bought, chlorine-based cleaner that does a good job, but literally makes me feel ill for hours after I clean. I just can’t take all those chlorine fumes. Becky says her tile cleaner really knocks the socks off dirt and will shine up your tile. I plan to make this cleaning product once I my newly ordered all-natural cleaning ingredients arrive from Amazon.com (my go-to place for cleaning supplies and other items). I bet this cleaning solution will smell terrific, too!
I also plan to whip up some of Becky’s Peppermint Daily Shower Cleaner Spray to keep soap scum at bay so I can keep my shower scrubbing to a minimum the next time it’s time to clean!
All Natural Cleaning for Home and Garden
Once spring comes, all I ever want to do is be in my garden, so I know I will be putting together Becky’s garden tool cleaning kit. I’ve never once cleaned my garden tools, and never known how to before! So my garden tools can really use some TLC. I am looking forward to giving new life to my gardening tools!
I usually use my blue-toned window /all-purpose, store-bought spray cleaning product (we won’t mention names here) for all-purpose cleaning in my home, but I am eager to switch to Becky’s Lemon and Peppermint All-Purpose Cleaner. I tend to forget to wear gloves when I clean. I won’t have to worry when using Becky’s recipe if I accidentally get my hands soaked in it a little bit, like I do when I use the other stuff.
Cleaning Checklists
One thing I really love about “The Organically Clean Home” are the cleaning checklists at the back of the book. Those checklists will really help me to make sure that all spots and corners of my home get cleaned — I tend to make sure that the kitchen and the main living areas are cleaned, but tend to somewhat neglect the bedrooms and upstairs bathrooms. I would really like to better about keeping the whole house cleaned, not just the main floor, so everyone can feel happier and healthier in our home.
Thanks, Becky, for sharing your book with me — I know that it will help me create a cleaner and more chemical-free home!
