Today, my husband and I visited Sayen Gardens in Hamilton, NJ, with our Shih Tzu pup—this park is dog friendly! I always love going to the gardens, located about 15 minutes by car from my house. They are a serene retreat that really feels like a different world. Its beauty changes throughout the seasons—in spring, there are 1,000 or so azaleas in bloom, as well as other springtime favorites like tulips, while in summer, its forested areas are a quiet and lush green, highlighted with daisies and other blooms. Amazingly, admission to this attraction is free!
Now maintained by Hamilton Township, NJ, the grounds were developed by avid gardener and world traveler Frederick Sayen, who owned a rubber mill in nearby Hamilton Square. After purchasing the acreage in 1912, he built a bungalow-style home there and created the gardens. Now, run by the township, the grounds and the home can be reserved for private events like weddings and parties.
Beautiful New Jersey Gardens
The gardens host an azalea festival every Mother’s Day weekend—I haven’t made it there for that celebration yet, but I really should go one year! Besides the gorgeous flowers, the event offers attractions like food trucks, vendor stalls filled with crafts and other goods, and live music. A friend of mine always goes there for Mother’s Day, and her husband always takes fabulous photos of her with her kids against a backdrop of beautiful blooms.
Sayen Gardens’ fountain-studded koi pond is a central attraction with its beautiful arched bridge, and it’s always fun to watch the koi fish and turtles. The gardens are also a favorite spot for quinceañera, prom and wedding photos, and I always love seeing young girls, couples and families dressed up in their very best. There was a cute couple there today with their little boy and girl, all dressed up in black and white formal attire.
There are several gravel paths that wind through the gardens’ 30 or so acres, which are maintained by its team of dedicated gardeners and groundskeepers. The paths are flat and easy to traverse, and there are garden benches plentifully scattered throughout, making the gardens a perfect spot for folks of all ages to enjoy. The park is also a great location to see multiple species of birds—I saw a spotted a red-winged blackbird today.
In addition to the koi pond, there are at least three other water features in the park, including the cute seating area shown below, which has a fountain and an adjacent gazebo—people were busily festooning the shelter with streamers for an event while we were visiting today.

There is also another pond with a viewing deck in an open field, and a cute babbling stream (just off Hughes Drive) with a mini waterfall.
Fun New Jersey Day Trip
Although the gardens are relatively small—you can explore most of them in an hour or two, depending on your pace—they offer plenty of beautiful spots to discover. One such gem is this lovely gazebo.

Set into the floor of the gazebo is a beautiful inscribed Sayen Gardens plaque. A snapshot of it makes a great souvenir!

The sunlight streaming through the wrought-iron, lace-like roof was really quite beautiful on Saturday.

Dog-Friendly New Jersey Park
And while the grounds can be crowded at some times, such as in late spring for prom and wedding photos, there are other moments, like today, when the gardens can feel like your very own private oasis. I love that I am free to bring my pup with me! (He just has to remain on-leash and I am always sure to clean up after him.)
The day was a bit too warm today for my Shih Tzu, so my husband and headed home after only about an hour of exploring this gorgeous location.

Although I have visited these beautiful New Jersey gardens multiple times, I never tire of them!
