Buying shoes for one child can already feel like a challenge. Buying for twins is a completely different experience—I certainly discovered this when my twins were growing up!
At first, I thought it would be simple. Same age, same sizes, same needs. Just double everything and move on. That idea lasted about one shopping trip together once they could express their own opinions!
Very quickly, I realized that even twins have completely different preferences, comfort levels and ideas. And when both kids need new shoes at the same time, things can get complicated quickly.
Same Age Doesn’t Mean Same Fit
One of the biggest surprises was how differently their feet developed.
Even though they are the same age, their shoe sizes did not always match perfectly. One needed a bit more room in the toe area, while the other preferred a tighter fit.
That meant I could not just grab two identical pairs and be done with it.
I changed my tactic to always:
- Check each child’s size individually
- Have them try shoes on separately
- Make sure both pairs feel right, not just look right
Doing these tasks adds a bit more time to the process, but it avoids problems later.
Kids Care About Style More Than You Expect

Comfort matters, but style matters too, especially as kids get older.
At some point, my twins started having very strong opinions about what they wanted to wear. And often, they didn’t always want the same things.
This is where skate shoes unexpectedly became part of the conversation.
Skate shoes have that “cool” factor kids love. Even if they are not actually skateboarding, they like the look and the vibe. Brands like Vans are often at the top of their list because the styles feel simple, recognizable and easy to wear with everyday outfits. There have been a few pairs of Vans in my household!
From a parent’s perspective, skate shoes also tend to be:
- durable
- easy to clean
- suitable for everyday use
They are not always the most cushioned option for long walks, but for school and casual wear, they can be a solid choice.
You Will Go Through Shoes Faster Than You Think

Buying for twins means everything happens in pairs. Including wear and tear.
Shoes that might last months for one child can wear out much faster when you are dealing with two active kids.
Running, climbing, dragging feet, playing outside. It all adds up.
That is why I started paying more attention to:
- quality of materials
- how well the soles hold up
- whether the shoes keep their shape over time
Spending slightly more on durable shoes often saves money in the long run.
Comfort Still Comes First
No matter how much kids care about style, comfort has to come first.
Uncomfortable shoes lead to complaints, and eventually, shoes that do not get worn.
The NHS recommends choosing shoes that feel comfortable right away and support natural foot movement, which is especially important for growing children.
That is something I learned quickly. If they say a shoe feels off, it usually is.
Buying in Bulk Isn’t Always the Answer

It is tempting to buy multiple pairs at once to save time and money. I tried that early on.
The problem is that kids’ feet grow quickly, and preferences change just as fast.
Buying too far ahead often leads to shoes that never get worn.
Now I try to stay a bit more flexible. Buy what they need now, and keep an eye on when the next size might be coming.
Let Them Have a Say
One thing that made the process easier was letting each child choose within a few good options.
Instead of trying to control every detail, I narrowed things down to a few pairs that met my standards for comfort and durability, then let them pick their favorite.
It reduced arguments and made them more likely to actually wear the shoes.
Expect Some Trial and Error
Even with experience, buying shoes for twins is not always smooth.
Sizes change. Preferences shift. What worked last time might not work this time.
The process gets easier, but it never becomes completely predictable.
What I Do Differently Now
I take more time when choosing. I focus on comfort and durability first. I accept that they will not always want the same things.
And I always expect a bit of chaos during the process.
Buying shoes for twins is not just about finding the right pair. It is about finding two pairs that work, at the same time, for two completely different personalities.
Once you accept that, everything becomes a little easier.
