My kitchen isn’t the most stylish of kitchens. (I would love a kitchen remodel!) But my daughters and I love spending time in our kitchen together!
Our kitchen is the place where I first fed my daughters peas and carrots when they were teeny tiny, where they helped me bake when they were just tots and where they now try out new baking recipes on their own! Our GE appliances have been very reliable, and we still bake in the same GE oven that I baked in when my kids were only toddlers!
I started out baking with my twin girls when they were just 2 or 3 years old. We started out preparing simple brownie and cake mixes together. At first, I used to pour the ingredients in a mixing bowl, place the bowl on the floor and let them stir! (And hope most of the ingredients stayed in the bowl!) I’d also give them each one of the mixing spoons to lick! Yum!
As my daughters got older, I gave them more responsibilities and let them help measure out the ingredients. For example, when we would make a brownie mix together, one would stir in the oil and the other would stir in the water. I would mix in the eggs to prevent shells from getting into the mix!
Kids in the Kitchen
My tweens totally surprised me in the kitchen recently! I had foot surgery a few weeks ago and haven’t been very mobile. So a few weeks ago, I let them take the reins and bake two recipes on their own from start to finish. They baked snickerdoodles and chocolate chip cookies totally on their own! They didn’t burn anything (or themselves), and even cleaned up after they were done! (Much to my relief.) It was nice to sit back and then enjoy the delicious cookies they made!
