Basements have to be the WORST place to declutter. At least mine is. I’ve been wanting to create a playspace for my kids in our home’s basement for years now, but haven’t gotten around to it.
That’s because our basement, which once once fairly neat with only a few boxes piled in it, is now a mess. When my twins were tots, I didn’t have the time needed to keep the space clean, so whenever we had stuff that we needed to store, we just threw it down in the basement. To top if off, we accumulated belongings from family and friends that is now stored in the space.
I have set up a play area for my kids that was neat a few months ago, but now, after several play sessions in the basement, there are toys scattered everywhere. Cleaning up just that small area of the basement will no doubt take an hour or two, or maybe more.
So, this week, I hope to tackle the basement and hopefully, get it cleaned up to create a decent playroom for my kids. My first goal is to get the boxes of stuff that we are storing in the basement off the floor and onto shelves — so I plan to hit a home improvement store today to pick up some shelving. After that, I hope to improve the space with better toy storage, perhaps some paint and maybe some carpet floor tiles or an area rug. (I’ve been looking for deals on carpet tiles with little luck. I like the look of the carpet tiles, especially Flor carpet tiles, but they tend to be pricey per square foot.)
I’ll have to update you on how the cleaning session goes!

This is your garden gnome. I want you to come outside and plant those peas. Remember how much your daughters loved eating them? You can just use the same dirt from last year. They won’t mind that much.
At least you can see the floor of your basement. We hid Will’s bday present down there with a small towel over it and he never even noticed……

Thanks for posting, garden gnome! We really do need to plant those peas!
I’ll kids would probably never notice a gift in our basement, either — it’s still such a mess! That’s funny about the towel!

We live in FL, and there are no basements here. I cannot wait to have a basement when we move to Indiana. Hopefully we can get into a place with a finished basement so that we can have our family room/playroom down there!

Good luck! Moving into a home that already has a finished basement would be heavenly!
