Amazon is having its BIG SPRING SALE, so now is the perfect time to ready your patio and buy all the decor, furnishings and supplies you’ll need! I adore sitting on my paver patio with my Shih Tzu pup, so I recently worked on getting it spruced up. Because the patio can be quite sunny, I got myself a half umbrella to shade the little outdoor loveseat that I like to sit on outside with my pup. I got a red patio umbrella, since dark umbrellas block the sun and its UV rays more effectively.
I needed something sturdy to hold my umbrella upright. So I made a DIY flower pot umbrella holder and put it on wheels—it gives me a place to plant pretty flowers for spring, and I can move the pot around as the sun changes its position throughout the day. My resulting flower-pot umbrella holder is beautiful and was less expensive than purchasing a heavy umbrella stand—during my research, I read that many stand-alone umbrella stands can topple over easily. I didn’t want my umbrella to fall on me, or especially, my pup!
I adore my loveseat—it has just enough space for me to sit with him—he loves to nap next to me. The seat also has a matching ottoman that I use as a mini coffee table. By the loveseat I have a mini solar water fountain I made by combining two flower pots from Walmart and a solar fountain.

For my project, I used a large 20″ flower pot, a 2-inch-by-2-foot PVC pipe, fast-set concrete mix, and a 5-gallon bucket. I think I first got the idea for this project from TikTok. I chose a 2-inch-wide PVC pipe since that size looked like it would fit the pole of my umbrella best. (Your PVC pipe should be wider than the diameter of your umbrella pole.)

Assembling my DIY Flower Pot Umbrella Holder
The first thing I did was spray paint my piece of PVC pipe blue (so it would match my flower pot) and let it dry. Next, I put together a wheeled plant stand that I bought on Amazon. The one I got can hold a lot of weight (over 400 pounds!) and can be used indoors or outdoors. It’s easy to assemble and rolls smoothly.
I then put my large flower pot on the wheeled stand and placed the bucket in the middle of it. I set up a criss-cross pattern of painter’s tape across the top so it wouldn’t hold my PVC pipe in it upright vertically. The next step was to fill my bucket with my quick concrete mix. (That step was difficult, since the bag of mix was quite heavy!)
Then, following the instructions on the package, I mixed water into the mix. (I used a trowel for this.) I wore both eye protection and a Covid-type mask while doing so. (To prevent getting the mix into my eyes or nose.) I let the concrete dry overnight. The next day, I put some empty crushed water bottles in the flower pot (to take up some space) and then filled the planter with potting soil. I also added a layer of gray gravel on top to provide extra weight so my pot won’t tip over—the gravel will also help to prevent weeds from growing. I keep the pipe covered with a matching small silicone bowl cover when it’s not in use, since I don’t want it to fill up with water. This method works really well! Another option would have been to use a 2″ PVC pipe cap.

Putting my flower-pot umbrella stand together was really quite easy and I love how it turned out.

After that, all there was left to do was add my umbrella!

My new umbrella stand looks great, and it’s perfect because I can wheel it to different spots during the day as the sun changes its position—I can add flowers to it. I am looking forward to enjoying some pretty spring days out on the patio with my pup!
This is a super easy project if you’d like to give it a try! If you have any questions about it, be sure to leave a question in the comments!
