Throughout this blog post, I’ve linked my favorite accessories for a spending a day at the beach! Be sure to check out my picks!
Picture yourself sitting on a sunny deck overlooking bright blue waters and enjoying the warm sea breeze as your ship leisurely sails to your next dream beach vacation destination. Sounds fantastic, right? There’s a reason why summer cruises are so popular—you can enjoy a number of tropical destinations and memorable shore excursions and only have to unpack only once—only when you board the ship and are ready to enjoy your trip!
Whether you’re planning a short Mediterranean getaway or prefer going on one of the many cruises from Florida to a destination further afield in the Caribbean, you’ll need to gear up to protect yourself from both the sun and the sand to remain safe on beach days. Here’s how!
Cover Up Well
When packing, make sure to carry lightweight cover-ups in silk, linen or merino wool as they will be absolutely the best ways to avoid getting sunburnt when exposed to the sun’s harsh rays. While loose, long-sleeve shirts will look fabulous for gents, women can consider wearing colorful kaftans to get an instant seaworthy look.
Invest in the Right Sunscreen

Some people shun sunscreen because of sometimes unpleasant smells or qualities, but if you purchase a high-quality product, it will be a wonderful option for the face and even for the whole body as it will be creamy with no unpleasant features. Be sure to get quality sunscreen with a sun protection factor of at least 30, and reapply it every two hours—or more often if you’ve been in the water; always be sure to smooth on some more sunscreen after swimming.
Consider Eye Protection
Apart from wreaking havoc on your skin, the sun can damage the eyes, especially the strong rays which you might experience on the cruise as well as on the beach. This is a great time to put on a pair of chic polarized sunglasses, as not only you will be looking at the water from time to time, but your new shades will provide an Instagram feel as well.
Take Precautions on the Beach

While white sand beaches can get hot very quickly under the strong sun, rocky beaches can be rough underneath your feet. Protect yourself by at least wearing a pair of sandals. You could even get a pair of waterproof slides in various colors to match all your cruise outfits. Prevent your beach umbrella from blowing away by planting it two feet deep and tilt it in the direction the wind is blowing.
Protect Yourself in the Water
Strong and narrow currents, which prevail in large bodies of water, can easily flow away from the shore and pull a person precariously into deeper water. If you find yourself caught in one, just float and stay calm to overcome the rip current or swim laterally to the nearest sandbar where the waves are breaking.
Shield Yourself From the Sun’s Rays
Treat a beach day like attending an all-day event. Carry a big beach cooler with ample water and healthy snacks. Don’t forget to bring cover-ups and adorable hats. Fresh water is vital, and even more so in the summer months, so drink it throughout the day and avoid consuming alcohol. Alcohol and swimming are like drinking and driving—a big No-No.
With these tips and gear, all your beach days are likely be to be great ones!
