Christmas might look different to a lot of us this year, thanks to the Covid-19 pandemic. Many of us might be skipping holiday get togethers with friends or extended family to keep our loved ones safe.
My family and I will be staying close to home this year – it will just be my husband, twin daughters and our pup, Mochi. Although our holiday will be simpler this year, it doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy it! So I am going all out this year in decorating my home for Christmas.
I recently added a new faux Christmas tree from Nearly Natural to my living room. I love it! I decorated the tree in a rustic style with homemade salt dough ornaments, handmade wood slice ornaments, a DIY garland and a tree topper I made myself. The tree came with its own adorable white fairy lights.
Today, I am sharing a sweet 1950s ornament tree that my husband bought me from a thrift shop a few months ago.
I am going to display the ornament tree in my kitchen this year, so I decided to make kitchen-themed wood slice ornaments with my Silhouette machine for the tree. Cutting the vinyl for these ornaments was my first Silhouette project! Working with my Silhouette Cameo machine was easier than I thought it would be!
To make the ornaments, I simply used transfer tape to apply my Silhouette-made vinyl designs onto my wood slices. I then used some Mod Podge on top to better secure the designs and to provide a protective coating.
My ornament tree is gold – I was tempted to spray paint it white or black. But my daughters insisted that I shouldn’t change it! So I left my thrift store find ornament tree as is.
Check out my tutorial for how I made the vinyl designs for my kitchen ornaments in this post.
I purchased all the designs for about 99 cents each in the Silhouette store. I found a teapot design, a “We Whisk You a Merry Christmas” design and a gingerbread man design. I also printed out some Christmas trees using my Silhouette Cameo.
I love working with wood slice ornaments. ((You can get the pre-drilled Wood Slices I used on Amazon.)
I also made sweet snowflake wood slice ornaments for my new Nearly Natural rustic Christmas tree. (I didn’t use my Silhouette Cameo for those ornaments, though. I just used craft paint and some snowflake window clings that I didn’t use for my snowy Christmas window project .)

O my goodness that is what I was going to post anyway! I was going to say that this year I wanted so bad to decorate that last year we got lights to hang up outside it was going to be the first time. Then my father had to have hip surgery and I am extremely afraid of heights. it just was not meant to be. So our decorations are limited to to our porch and things at eye sight. With this year being so crappy and my son being 6 Christmas has to rock!
