Looking after your hearing is very important, although a lot of people overlook it. Having good hearing can benefit you in various ways, and it’s well known that good hearing can help your mental health—there is nothing worse than not being able to hear and having to keep asking someone to repeat themselves.
With hearing being so important, it’s vital that you look after it. That’s why a few changes to your daily routine can make a big difference and promote good hearing health. Things like not listening to music too loudly, using hearing protection, getting regular hearing checks and maintaining your physical health can all make a difference.
Keep on reading for our guide on looking after your hearing.
Getting regular hearing checks

For starters, getting routine hearing checks can help you maintain a good hearing; you should get a baseline check of your hearing at least by age 65. By having regular checkups, you can ensure your eardrums are working as they should and that you are hearing the right level of noise daily. If, on your checkup, your doctor thinks your hearing is suffering, they may recommend that you use hearing aids as a way to improve your hearing. Music in hearing therapy is a good way to get used to them if you haven’t used them before.
Not listening to music too loudly

Something a lot of us do, which isn’t healthy, is listen to our music at too high a volume. The louder we listen to our music or movies through headphones, the more damage we are potentially doing to our eardrums, which could affect our hearing. By monitoring the volume levels at which you listen to your headphones and actively reducing them, you’ll be taking an important step in protecting your long-term hearing health. You could also try using noise-canceling headphones, which will allow you to screen out unwanted background noise so you can hear your headphones at a lower volume. If you own an iPhone, you can ask it to monitor the noise level you are exposed to, such as when traveling, a time when you may find yourself listening to them more often.
Using hearing protection
If you work in a noisy environment (such as construction sites, factories or music venues), proper hearing protection is essential. Over-ear defenders or muffs or in-ear plugs can significantly reduce sound exposure without affecting your ability to do your job. Even hobbies like motorcycling, woodworking, or shooting sports or home tasks like mowing your lawn or working on DIY projects, may call for protection. You’ll be surprised at how much noise you can let into your ears without knowing on a daily basis, which could be doing damage. If you have multiple music festivals coming up, you should definitely consider wearing hearing protection, especially if you like to be at the front.
We hope our guide has given you some useful pointers on ways to look after your hearing. As mentioned above, your hearing is extremely important and should not be put on the back burner; instead, keep it at the forefront of your daily life.
