It has been bitterly cold the past few weeks here in New Jersey, and the snow is just not going away! I am NOT a winter person and haven’t been enjoying his weather! So I decided to do some crafting to lift my spirits by making dried flower suncatchers. This DIY spring craft couldn’t be easier, requires only a handful of materials and produces beautiful floral suncatchers!
Supplies

Plastic lid
Glue (I used Aleene’s, but you could also use Elmer’s)
Dried flowers (I used these dried flowers)
Twine or string
Precision tweezers (optional: found it just as easy to lightly dampen my fingers with some tap water to gently lift up the dried flowers)
First, I collected and cleaned (with soap and water) some plastic caps from food jars that I was discarding. When you collect yours, be sure the ones you choose don’t have raised or engraved lettering on them because it will show up in your design.
I next applied a layer of glue to the bottom of each cap, making sure that the entire surface was fully covered. I then applied a few flowers or foliage of my choice to each cap, on top of the glue. I followed up by adding another layer of glue in each cap over the flowers so they were fully covered.

I allowed my glue-filled caps to dry for two days. Then I removed my DIY sun catchers from the caps—they popped right out. I trimmed each sun catcher to remove ridged portions (formed by the edges of my caps.) The sun catchers were curling up a bit on the edges at first, so I placed them underneath a heavy glass dish for a while to flatten them out.
After that, all that was left to do was punch a hole through each sun catcher, thread some twine through each hole and hang my sun catchers!

I like the fun extra bits of color that the flower suncatchers add to the window!

There are lots of ways to make your own DIY suncatchers, including using some glue and paint on recycled plastic, such as from your plastic containers. I would also like to try creating bioplastic suncatchers with gelatin and natural materials like fruit, leaves, or branches.
Last year, my daffodils were blooming in my garden in late March, so with any luck, I can view some live flowers in my garden a little over a month from now! But until now, I can enjoy these!
