How to Grow Strawberries in Pots

If you’ve ever dreamed of picking sweet, juicy strawberries right from your patio or balcony, the good news is you don’t need a big backyard to grow them! Strawberries thrive in pots, making them one of the easiest and most rewarding fruits for beginners to grow at home. Even better, it’s not too late to get started—you can usually find healthy strawberry plants at your local nursery this time of year. The weather has really warmed up here in New Jersey, making it the perfect time to get outside, enjoy the fresh air, and do a little gardening! I’m hoping to plant a few strawberry plants this week. Stackable pots are especially helpful because they let you grow several strawberry plants vertically, saving space while also creating good airflow and making harvesting easier. Adding a rolling plant caddy underneath can make it easier to move your plants into a sunny location.

Additionally, be sure to use a high-quality potting mix instead of garden soil, which won’t provide enough drainage in a container. Strawberries thrive in rich, well-draining soil and love sunshine, so place your pots where they’ll get at least six hours of direct sun each day. A sunny patio, deck or balcony is perfect.

You’ll be happy to lear that strawberries are low maintenance, too! Just make sure you water them regularly, especially during hot weather, and feed them with a balanced fertilizer every few weeks during the growing season. You can make the process easier by using self-watering planters and watering globes—so your plants will stay adequately hydrated even if you forget or don’t have the time to water them every now and then.
