written by Lauren Leave a Comment

Photo courtesy of depositphotos.com Living with pets (like my sweet pup, Mochi) means a lot of great things—companionship, laughter, daily routines filled with tail wags or purring—but it also comes with a few challenges. Chief among them: pet dander and odor. These two issues can sneak up on you. You might not even notice them until your allergies flare up or a guest politely mentions “that pet smell.” Oh no! Photo courtesy of depositphotos.com But that doesn’t mean you have a dirty home. It’s just that pets naturally leave a trace of their presence behind—and those particles can Continue reading...

written by Lauren 1 Comment

a senior woman in her kitchen

When parents begin to slow down, their house shouldn’t become a hindrance. The majority of older adults prefer to remain in their own homes, surrounded by familiarity, and occasionally, brief modifications to their homes need to be made in order to meet their evolving requirements. Fortunately, you don’t have to gut the bathroom and rebuild the stairs to assist. Several simple adjustments can simplify their life and increase safety and dignity for aging relatives. Rethink About Lighting in All the Right Places As you get older, your eyes have to work a bit harder, particularly at Continue reading...

written by Lauren Leave a Comment

hair-care products for summer hair

Summer arrives with barbecue invitations, longer days, and lazy afternoons lounging poolside or on the beach. But for anyone sporting salon-crafted color, it also can result in fading hair pigment, dry ends, and undertones you never want to see. And even if you achieve salon-looking hair color at home, a blissful day at the beach can damage your hair, drying it out and diminishing its shine. The good news is that you don't need to hide inside all season or a build a massive floppy hat collection to maintain your hair's beautiful hue. You do, however, need a plan that incorporates science, Continue reading...

written by Lauren 4 Comments

Use these helpful tips to successfully grow warm-weather herbs and veggies this summer.

It's almost Mother's Day, which in New Jersey means that its time to start planting warm-weather herbs and vegetables! I don't plant many veggies, but I like to grow tomatoes and a few easy herbs, both in containers. Check out these growing tips to cultivate some veggies and herbs of your own! Growing Rosemary Rosemary is one of my all-time favorite herbs! I had a beautiful and bushy rosemary plant that lasted a few years, but it suddenly died a month or two ago! I used to enjoy cutting a sprig or two often to add to my potatoes. In New Jersey, it is best to plant rosemary this month Continue reading...

5 Reasons Why Regular HVAC Maintenance is Important for Your Home: Key Benefits for Comfort and Efficiency

written by Lauren 1 Comment

a well-maintained AC unit outdoors

With summer around the corner, now is a good time to get your heating and cooling systems checked by an HVAC professional to ensure that your home can stay comfortable as the seasons change and throughout the year. Regular care and checkups for these systems can make a big difference in how well they work. My husband and I have recently learned that lesson at a big cost! Unfortunately, we don't tend to service our HVAC system regularly and don't switch out our air filters every few months, and have had to replace our system, including our furnace and our AC, twice in the 20 or so years we Continue reading...

Useful Jigsaw Puzzle Tools and Tips

written by Lauren

A Day in Bungalowville jigsaw puzzle by Charles Wysocki that has been glued together with Mod Podge

My kids love to complete jigsaw puzzles and save them. So I developed a method of gluing the puzzles together by carefully using a foam brush to neatly cover the front of the puzzle with Mod Podge. (If you don't want any shine to your Mod Podge finish, pick the matte variety.) I then slip wax paper under the completed puzzle, and use that paper to carefully lift the puzzle up so I can slip a big piece of cardboard (usually a flattened box) underneath it. I then put another piece of cardboard on top, and carefully flip the puzzle over so I can also apply Mod Podge on the back of the puzzle Continue reading...

Brain Building Tips To Help Reluctant Readers

written by Lauren

tips for helping your child to learn reading

As a parent, you’re well aware of reading’s benefits. Even if countless studies didn’t highlight this fact, the pride of seeing your child read a book competently is more than enough to get you on board. Unfortunately, there’s every risk that your child isn’t half as enthused.  A surprising amount of children resist sitting down to read. As stressed as that might make you,  it’s entirely normal. Kids are built to move, so reading inevitably goes against what they want to do most of the time.  This leaves you in a tricky position because not only are you a busy parent who Continue reading...

Tips for the Recently Unemployed

written by Lauren

Follow these types if you've been laid off

Like many other people in the United States, I have been recently laid off. It happened about a month ago. I had started a normal Friday morning, and before I knew it, I was invited into a meeting with my direct supervisor and an HR representative. In a few minutes, my job as a content writer—one that I enjoyed and was very devoted to—was gone. At least, I consoled myself after the meeting, I didn't burst into tears immediately; instead I was steely and held myself together. (Yay, me!) Getting laid off can be difficult, and not just because you've lost a source of income. Losing a job can Continue reading...
