
We don’t exercise enough. I know I don’t!
You may look for excuses for your lack of exercise, but the truth is that U.S. adults are well aware that they fall behind when it comes to staying physically active. That’s probably why 25% of them decided that exercising more should be their top resolution for 2026.
There are a lot of reasons why people don’t exercise enough. The most obvious and least often talked about is the difficult work/life balance. Long working hours, paired with long commutes, don’t leave a lot of time to hit the gym. If you add the cost of a gym membership and the increasing cost of living on top of that, it’s simple to see why most fitness-related resolutions fail in the first few weeks of a new year.
But, if you consider various ways to introduce physical activity in your own home, you might actually be able to reach your fitness goals this year!
#1. Buy Basic Home Gym Equipment

If going to the gym is too expensive, buying simple sports equipment to use at home can be the best solution for you.
Your home gym doesn’t have to be fancy. You can keep it budget-friendly with a set of hand weights and a gym ball or an inexpensive walking pad. This will not only be gentle on your wallet, but it’s also an easy way to stay active when you have a hectic schedule. You can even do your workout in the evening in front of your favorite TV show!
#2. A Stand-up Desk

Most professional careers force people into a static position, typically sitting at their desks. Sedentary jobs are almost everywhere. Changing jobs isn’t an option for most, but changing your work setup can make a big difference.
Standing desks are a great way to address the risks of prolonged sitting. They also help you burn a little more calories every hour, which isn’t a bad thing. (I got a standing desk for my home office—check out my standing desk review.)
#3. Morning Run
Running a couple of miles before breakfast every few days can have many benefits. For starters, it’s a fantastic way to wake up, and it’s a lot healthier than a strong cup of coffee on an empty stomach.
But it also has a meditative and calming effect on the body and mind, which can help reduce other health risks in your day-to-day life.
#4. The Summer Pool
If you are gearing up already for the next heat wave, you want to be considering the addition of a pool to your backyard. There are different types of pools, and if easy installation is a priority, oval above ground pools are a fantastic option for it. I would love to have a pool in my own backyard, as I love swimming and I am sure having one would help me to be much fitter—I’ve been researching how with just a swim belt and a tether, it’s more than possible to swim laps, even in the smallest of pools.
Pools can encourage you to spend more time swimming or even resistance walking in the water if the pool is too small for a swim.
It doesn’t have to be about long distance or stamina. A pool can be a refreshing and inviting way to stay active in spring and summer.
#5. Walking Everywhere
Practically, you can’t walk everywhere because the distances are too great to cover in a short time. But you can certainly squeeze 8k to 10k steps in your daily routine by parking further away from work, shopping locally without a car, or even taking the stairs when you need to ascend or descend to another floor.
These are easy habits to introduce and they can change your health.
