There’s something beautifully underrated about sitting down with a coffee alone. No meetings, no multitasking, no small talk. Just you, your cup of choice, and a little slice of calm. If you’ve ever felt awkward sitting in a cafe and sipping solo, or you weren’t sure what to do with yourself while sipping a latte in peace, you’re not alone.
A lot of people choose not to have coffee by themselves because they feel awkward about it. But maybe you should more often. I’ve put together a shortlist of how to truly enjoy a coffee alone without feeling out of place or constantly reaching for your phone.

- Choose the right spot. If you are heading out to a cafe, choose where to go well—not all coffee places are created equal. If you’re aiming for a quiet moment, pick one with a cozy corner, good lighting and a laid-back vibe. If the cafe you choose has window seats, that’s a bonus! There’s something soothing about sipping a warm drink and people watching. If you’re not into a busy cafe, you can make your own little coffee ritual at home. Brew your favorite beans, break out your favorite Sudoku puzzle, and find a comfy chair. Sit back, relax, and slow down a bit.
- Bring something to entertain you. A lot of people like to bring a newspaper along or a good book with them when they have their coffee. Being able to read in peace, away from the kids or before they get to the office is often a fun activity that can allow you to center yourself. You can enjoy a small focused activity when you have a solo coffee and that’s why Sudoku comes in, or reading the newspaper comes in, or even just doing a mini puzzle from the puzzle book in your bag.
- Just embrace the quiet. It might feel strange at first to sit alone without scrolling or talking to anybody, but this is the golden part. You can just allow yourself to be with no expectations. You can listen to the background chatter or look at the scenery outside your window. You could even just watch the steam swirl from your cup. Take a deep breath and tune into that moment because silence can be surprisingly refreshing when you let it in. You could even purchase yourself a bakery item or small treat to enjoy with your coffee!
- Reflect. Don’t scroll. Instead of diving into emails or scrolling through social media, try just reflecting. It’s tempting to get your phone out and distract your mind with the world outside of you, but jot down a few thoughts in a journal or think about things that you’re grateful for. Having a coffee alone means taking some time to enjoy your own company, so log off and pay attention to yourself.
Enjoy Some Me Time
Having a coffee by yourself is not about being antisocial, it’s about carving out a moment for you. It’s giving yourself permission to slow down and recharge and it’s permission to be fully present. So the next time you have 20 minutes and are craving caffeine, don’t wait for company. Go sit, sip and enjoy your own presence for a few minutes for a healthy change.
