Now that summer is here, I am hoping to spend more time in our backyard. Our backyard is much improved from when we moved in, when all the backyard had was grass, some trees and a view of the schoolyard behind our house. Two years ago, we put in a gray paver patio, and it looks great! I was lucky enough to snag a black wrought-iron patio set at a big discount from Smith & Hawkins when it went out of business three years ago. Privacy Fence My home’s backyard is also much improved since we planted some skip laurel bushes along the chain link fence that separates our yard from Continue reading...

Organizing With Shoe Bags
This post contains Amazon affiliate links. I’ve been pinning a fair amount on Pinterest lately, and I’ve been finding a lot of creative uses for hanging shoe bags – and I mean doing much more than organizing shoes! I’ve seen shoe bags used as office and craft supply organizers and by adding some potting soil, even as hanging planters. I’ve been thinking of maybe trying the hanging planter idea – I’d like to find something to add interest to my yard’s chain link fence. Organizing This and That A hanging shoe organizer can also be a great central organizing area Continue reading...
Coming Up Roses
It's been raining buckets lately here in New Jersey, which has been both a good and a bad thing. It's been great for the gardens that my daughters and I have planted -- in the gardens, our peas, sunflowers, lettuce and cucumbers have sprouted, and the basil, oregano and tomatoes I've planted are doing well. Also, the yellow roses in my front yard have started to bloom, so I'm happy about that! Weeds and More Weeds What has not been so great is that all the rain has encouraged the weeds to grow in the planting bed in my home's front yard -- I am sure our neighbors hate our weeds! We're Continue reading...

Free Grocery Tote Bag
Just in time for Mother’s Day, InkGarden.com is offering a free customizable grocery bag – the only cost to you is $4.99 for shipping. To get the free bag, be sure to use the code FREEBAG when checking out. The bags are 100% recyclable and can decompose in a landfill, according to InkGarden.com. The bags are said to be able to hold up to 30 pounds of groceries each – which is great, because I’ve had my toes smashed in the past from large cans that that have Continue reading...
Beautifying the Backyard
With all the rain that was in the forecast this week for my home’s Central New Jersey area, I decided to take advantage of the wet weather and get some planting done, so my newly planted greenery could soak up the moisture. First up was planting some impatiens in shades of pink and violet in the planting bed that sits before a row of skip laurel bushes at the back of my home’s backyard. I recently put up a fencescreenon the chain link fence that separates my yard from a playground, so now that my backyard’s view ends at a planting bed filled with the skip laurels, I wanted to add a splash Continue reading...
Is Our Furniture too Fat?
I have been on the lookout lately for a simple, small-scale sofa or loveseat to place in my living room. The room is on the small side and quite narrow, so I don’t want a massive coach or sectional that will take up the whole room. My house is about average size, just above 2,100 square feet. So you’d think that finding an appropriately sized sofa or loveseat would be a fairly simple task. But it isn’t. I’ve been to nearly every furniture store in the suburbs where I live – places like Raymour and Flanigan, Ethan Allen, Pottery Barn and La-Z-Boy, only to find that most of the furniture Continue reading...
Almost Planting Time
Now that my family’s vegetable garden is nearly on its way (I still have to add more soil), I’ve been thinking about what we want to plant this spring. My daughters and I definitely would like to plant some peas. We got a bit of a late start last year (and didn’t plant until about May), so this year we will do it right and plant our peas around St. Patrick’s Day, the traditional pea planting time for much of the Mid-Atlantic states. We had some success with sunflowers in our garden last year, so this year we hope to plant sunflowers again, but BIGGER ones. So, I purchased a few Continue reading...
About Me
Hi! Welcome to my blog! I’m Lauren, a mom who is passionate about her family, loves to write, read and make her home the best it can be. I live in the Princeton, NJ, area, which is about an hour from Philadelphia and New York City, so there is lots here to keep a mom busy! I love writing about my home and family and like to try out new products for my house and kids! I’ve worked on staff (as an editor, blogger and writer) at places like The Wall Street Journal and Soap Opera Digest, but I’ve since traded fancy NYC digs for my NJ home office, Continue reading...
