I read on Yahoo today that Internet stories on small spaces are becoming more prevalent and more popular. As people struggle to make a living in today's rough economy, I am sure smaller, but more affordable, spaces are more in demand. I watched a video today about Felice Cohen, a woman who makes her living as a professional organizer and lives in a miniscule 90-square-foot apartment. The pluses to her small New York City space are that it is centrally located, is only a block from Central Park, and rents for only $700 a month -- which is a steal for Manhattan. I watched videos today about Continue reading...

The Dish on My New Dishwasher
It’s been quite a busy summer – with the kids out of school, I haven’t been posting as much on MomHomeGuide. But, the kids will be starting up summer camp soon, so check in to read some new posts! It’s been about a week since a new Bosch Ascenta dishwasher from Lowe’s has been installed in our kitchen. I am loving it so far! The dishwasher is super quiet, and to date, it’s working well. I tried using the delay start the other day, and it worked fine. Smaller, More Frequent Loads One possible drawback I’ve found is that the rack space in the dishwasher is much smaller than the Continue reading...
All Washed Up
After nearly 10 years of life and after a few repairs, my home’s GE Triton dishwasher died last week. During its lifespan, the GE dishwasher was OK, but not great. We had to have a new control panel installed a few years ago when the panel stopped working properly. Plus, the dishwasher has always been loud – very loud. No matter where I was in the house, I could tell when the dishwasher cycle started from the high-decibel sound it made. Because our kitchen is just off our family room, I usually put the machine on delay cycle so I wouldn’t disturb my family while they were watching TV in Continue reading...
Finding a Good Vacuum
My vacuum cleaner really sucks – in both good and bad ways. Last week, the hose on my third Eureka Boss vacuum broke. I’ve owned three Eureka boss vacuum cleaners in about the past eight years. I keep buying the Eureka because it is cheap (my Eureka Boss model sells for only $129 on Amazon.com) and it has really good suction. In fact, the suction is so good that when I first got the Boss, my sister commented on how clean my home’s carpets were, and shortly after getting the vacuum, I accidentally ripped a curtain rod (along with the curtains) off the wall when the vacuum sucked in the Continue reading...
A Gift for Tea Lovers
The other day, I did some shopping with my spouse and kids. We stopped at Teavana, a delightful shop filled with teas of all sorts, adorable teapots and handy teapot warmers. I meant only to try the delicious tea samples that the shop had on hand, but before I knew it, my husband was offering to buy me a teapot and teapot warmer, since I am constantly reheating my tea in the microwave daily. Some tea flavors that I love are chai tea, green tea and Oolong tea. Republic Chai® Red Tea Bags The store has a variety of teapots for sale that go with Teavana’s teapot warmers. The Continue reading...
Finishing a Basement on a Budget
*This post contains affiliate links. I still haven't gotten around to clearing out my home's basement (or at least, moving all the junk to just one area of the basement), but I am excited about new DIY finishing a basement on a budget ideas that I've found online. At the moment, my basement is mostly used for storage. My husband installed a wall of shelving in our basement for me. The shelves do a great job in containing our stuff! My dream for the basement would be to create a fun game room for my kids, complete with a TV, ping pong table and mini fridge! I have even put my own Continue reading...
Party Food!
I am hoping to host a family party in a few weeks, and as I am not the best of cooks, I’ve been on the search for tasty (but easy) recipes that I can serve. I’ve had a lot of luck with Pinterest, and think that through the online site, I’ve found a few recipes that might work for my next shindig. South of the Border Fare I found a great recipe for a cheesy enchilada casserole. The casserole looks easy enough for even me to pull off and it looks like something I could possibly freeze later if there is some casserole left after the guests have moved on from the entrees to the Continue reading...
Coming Up Roses
It's been raining buckets lately here in New Jersey, which has been both a good and a bad thing. It's been great for the gardens that my daughters and I have planted -- in the gardens, our peas, sunflowers, lettuce and cucumbers have sprouted, and the basil, oregano and tomatoes I've planted are doing well. Also, the yellow roses in my front yard have started to bloom, so I'm happy about that! Weeds and More Weeds What has not been so great is that all the rain has encouraged the weeds to grow in the planting bed in my home's front yard -- I am sure our neighbors hate our weeds! We're Continue reading...
Is It Time to Toss the Condiments in Your Fridge?
Open the door to my home’s refrigerator, and one usually find bottles and bottles of ketchup, salad dressing and other condiments on the door’s shelves. Even worse, the bottom drawer of my fridge tends to accumulate those sauce packets that are free when we go to Taco Bell, McDonald’s and the local Chinese restaurant. Which got me to wondering: How long do condiments last? What is the shelf life of things like ketchup and salad dressings? I did some research, and found out that things like cocktail sauce, salad dressing and mustard last a lot less longer than I thought they did. Website Continue reading...
The Best House for Your Family
When I purchased my house, I knew nothing about what kind of home would work best for my future family’s needs. I had no kids, and did not fully know what a mom would want in a home. Sure, I knew that my home’s location – on a cul-de-sac and within walking distance of an elementary school – would be great for us once my husband and I had children. I also liked the fact that the park has swings, a slide and a fun sandy play area for children. But I had no clue about what else a mom would want in a home. We chose a new Colonial house with an open floor plan, one in which the living room Continue reading...
