Becoming a dog owner can have many benefits. My family adopted a Shih Tzu about 8 years ago and love our little pup! If you’ve been considering whether to welcome a dog into your home, here are some of the perks that could convince you to consider dog adoption.
Companionship

The biggest benefit of owning a dog is companionship. Dogs are some of the most loyal friends you can have and can help people living by themselves to combat feelings of loneliness. My dog has become a buddy to all members of my family and we love including him whenever we get together.
Emotional Support
Dogs can often provide emotional support for those dealing with depression, anxiety, trauma or chronic stress. Through organizations like Wellness Wag, it may even be possible to apply for an official ESA (emotional support animal) if you have a diagnosed mental health condition. Mobility Assistance
Some dogs can also be trained to provide mobility assistance for those who are disabled or blind. They can help to provide stability on walks and retrieve items. Some can even be trained to open doors and push buttons.
Physical Exercise

Owning a dog gives you a reason to exercise. Some breeds require long walks every day, which can help owners to lose weight and build stamina. I like taking walks with my dog, and count on our walks together as part of my own fitness regimen. My pup also likes to play together at night, which can get my husband and I off the couch!
Outdoor Activity

For some people, finding a reason to go outdoors can be difficult. Owning a dog forces you to spend time outside—which of course is important for getting sunlight exposure and fresh air. You may even be encouraged to take up hiking and explore more of your local area. My dog has gone on plenty of adventures with my family, including hiking, visiting the beach and even seeing Niagara Falls!
Social interaction
Many people talk to you when you have a dog. My pup and I meet so many dog owners and other dogs at our local park. It can often be a great way to make new friends. There may even be classes, clubs and events you can join with your dog to meet new people. Joining such activities are ideal for anyone who wants to expand their social circle.
Sense of Routine

Because dogs are comforted by consistency you too will be forced to maintain a daily routine. My pup have several routines together—such as when he’s fed, goes on walks, and goes up to bed. He knows, enjoys and anticipates them! Having a dog can also encourage you to get up early and carry out walks and feeding at certain times, which may help you to stick to a healthier lifestyle.
Responsibility
A lot of people find the responsibility of looking after a dog rewarding. It can come with its challenges, but ultimately there’s a feeling of pride and purpose to caring for another living creature. If you have kids, it may also teach them to be responsible.
Home Security

Homes with dogs are a lot less likely to be burgled. Studies found that neighborhoods with high dog ownership often experienced less crime. Even if your dog is a big softie, they may still bark when faced with an intruder, and this will be enough to scare most burglars off. For instance, although my dog is little, he has a big bark! He’s often our first alert that somebody is approaching our home.
Pest Control
Dogs can also help to ward off pests like mice and rats. If you’ve got a recurring pest problem, you may find that it’s greatly reduced by getting a dog, as many rodents won’t enter a home knowing that there is a dog around.
Should You Get a Dog?

Obviously, there is a lot more to consider when considering getting a dog—such as the cost, time commitment, allergies you may and your lifestyle. Not everyone makes a suitable dog owner, but there are similarly many great potential owners out there who put off the decision. Be sure to weigh the pros and cons for your family when deciding whether getting a dog is right for you.
