The past few days have been busy at Mom Home Guide! A lot happened over the weekend. One of the most exciting things that happened is that the Insect Lore butterflies and ladybugs that we ordered through the mail have started to come out of their metamorphoses! The first to emerge were a few ladybugs, and then two butterflies came out of their chrysalises. My kids are very excited! We are planning to release the butterflies and ladybugs in our new perennial garden when all the butterflies and ladybugs finally emerge – which will probably be by next Continue reading...

Four Great Day New Jersey Day Trips
Earlier this month, my husband, kids and I enjoyed a wonderful "staycation" week of New Jersey day trips. We are lucky that we live in a great location in Central New Jersey that allows us easy access to so many fun places and things to do. Where we live in New Jersey, we are only 1 hour to about two hours away from New York City, Philadelphia, New Jersey beaches and the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania. Come take a look at some of the great New Jersey day trips we took, and plan your next New Jersey day trip! Ocean City, NJ Until this summer, my family and had never been Continue reading...

How to Make a Fringed Burlap Table Runner
I am so excited -- today I am guest posting for the mom blog, 5MinutesforMom! This Canadian mom blog is a great place for moms and features everything from DIY and craft tutorials, to giveaways to recipes. For 5MinutesforMom, I wrote about a very fun DIY craft I did for my home's dining table. I've been noticing that burlap decor is everywhere these days, from stenciled burlap to painted burlap, so I decided to do a burlap craft project of my own. DIY Fringed Burlap Table Runner My home's dining table is very long, so it's been difficult to find an inexpensive table runner for it! So, Continue reading...
Kitchen Wine Glass Organization
The cabinet space in my kitchen is limited, so I recently added some extra storage to my kitchen to hang some of my more decorative wine glasses. My husband isn't a wine drinker, so it isn't often that we drink wine together, but I do like to serve wine occasionally when my dad stops by for dinner, or when I have friends over from the block for a ladies' night. The wine rack that I chose -- the Oenophilia Under Cabinet Stemware Rack -- was just under $13 and can hold six wine glasses, plus my two margarita glasses. In the rack I've hung some pretty striped wine Continue reading...
Kitchen Organization
I've been working hard to organize my kitchen, but as any mom knows, keeping a kitchen neat and organized is a never-ending job! I recently organized a cabinet in my kitchen, with fairly good results. Using cloth organizing bins, I organized all the pantry staples that I store in there -- stuff like soup, canned vegetables and snacks for the kids. You can read more about my pantry cabinet in my post, Organization Spree: The Kitchen. K Cup Refreshment Center This fall, I also got my husband a Keurig (K Cup) coffee brewer, so I've also created a mini drink station on our kitchen Continue reading...
Cleaning Out the Toy Chests
Ever since my kids were tots, we’ve kept their wooden toy boxes in our living room. The living room, which is only furnished with an upright piano, was the perfect place for them to play in. The plush carpeting was nice for them to play on and cushioned their falls, and the room’s location just off the kitchen made it easy for me to keep an eye on them while I was cooking. But now that my kids are both 9, I am hoping to move the toy chests downstairs into a basement playroom. I would love to turn the living room into more of an adult living space, and furnish it with a small loveseat and a Continue reading...
Storage for Kids Rooms
Finding enough storage in children’s bedrooms can be tough, but if you buy furniture and accessories with storage in mind, you should be able to find plenty of storage for kids rooms. My daughters, 8, are twins and naturally enjoy sharing a room together. So, when I chose the children's furniture for their room, I chose children's furniture that would give us the most space as possible for storing their things. Their room is fairly large, but not that big, considering that we must fit two twin beds in there, a dresser, and as many places as possible to stash all their toys. So, Continue reading...
Time to “Boo” the Neighbors!
It’s that time of year again – it’s time to “boo” the neighbors! We started a little Halloween tradition last year in our neighborhood where kids and families take turns “booing” each other, secretly leaving fun little packages of treats, toys and goodies by a neighbor’s door. We are new to the tradition, but the Halloween tradition is popular in many neighborhoods across the country. Booing the neighbors is sort of like “Secret Santa,” where the gift recipient is left to guess who the gift giver is – but this fun activity is a fall tradition instead of a Christmas one. Our Own Continue reading...
Learning How to Ride a Bike
Last week, when my daughters' schools were closed for two days for the Rosh Hashanah holiday, I was finaly able to cross a big item off this mom's to-do list. My daughters learned how to ride their bikes! My kids have been riding their bikes -- with training wheels -- for a a few years now. I was nervous about the whole teaching-them-how-to-ride-a-bike thing, and wasn't really sure how to go about it. Plus, my kids never really rode their bikes too much (up until last week), so I wasn't sure whether they were ready to make the no-training-wheels leap just yet. Off with the Continue reading...
