For years, I have been trying to figure out what to do with my home’s living room. The long, narrow room leads from my home’s front door to the kitchen and the family room in my open-concept home. Since the room is a main thoroughfare in my home, I haven’t wanted to block the flow of traffic with furniture. So, I've been searching for small living room ideas. Plus, when my kids were tots, the carpeted living room space, which is just off the kitchen, was a great place for them to play. (That is why today, two toy chests still sit in the living room.) The only other furniture pieces of Continue reading...
Black and White Craft Room Design
Do you have a space in your home that’s not being used to its full potential? My friend Christine did, so she turned it into a rocking craft space! Dining/Living Space Turned Craft Room The space she converted into her craft space is just off her home’s kitchen and would normally be used as a dining or living room area. But Christine, who does wonders with a sewing machine (she created a beautiful parade banner for our Girl Scout troop) and is quite handy (she built a dollhouse for her daughter with working lights), decided the space would work better as her crafting area. The craft Continue reading...
Mom Home Guide House Tour
I just love looking at online house tours of other mom bloggers' homes. One house tour I recently saw was that of blogger Jenna from SAS Interiors. I just love how beautiful her home looks, from her tidy and clutter-free foyer, to her modern kitchen with beautiful wood floors to the serene master bedroom. I wish my home was so masterfully designed! To me, my home is a work in progress. Over the past few months, I've completed a few home improvements, like making our home's mudroom/foyer area more functional, creating a fun study/media/play space for the kids and adding Continue reading...
Living Room Inspiration Board
For years, I have been trying to figure out what to do with my home’s living room. The long, narrow room leads from my home’s front door to both the kitchen and the family room in my open-concept home. Plus, when my kids were tots, the carpeted space, which is just off the kitchen, was a great place for them to play. (That is why today, two toy chests still sit in the living room.) The only other furniture pieces of importance in my home's living room are an upright piano Continue reading...
Cleaning Out the Toy Chests
Ever since my kids were tots, we’ve kept their wooden toy boxes in our living room. The living room, which is only furnished with an upright piano, was the perfect place for them to play in. The plush carpeting was nice for them to play on and cushioned their falls, and the room’s location just off the kitchen made it easy for me to keep an eye on them while I was cooking. But now that my kids are both 9, I am hoping to move the toy chests downstairs into a basement playroom. I would love to turn the living room into more of an adult living space, and furnish it with a small loveseat and a Continue reading...
Living Room: Before and After
Sometimes, little improvements go a long way in helping to complete a room. Last spring, it was a big home improvement -- brand-new bay and picture windows for my home's living room -- that gave my home's living room a much-improved look. I especially love the bay window because it brings in a lot of light, and my children love to do their reading for school there. We got the new picture window to replace a leaky one, but the bay window was a total splurge. (Thanks, honey!) But shortly after the new windows were installed, I made some small improvements that I believe cost less than Continue reading...

Pinning for Home Décor
Homeowners shopping for home décor have a great new tool available to them. Pinterest, the social media platform that debuted in March 2011, is perfect for home shoppers who are looking for decorating ideas and suggestions, and who need a place to see how those ideas work together. On the site, users can “pin” images that they like from across the Web to visual boards they create. For instance, in MomHomeGuide.com’s Pinterest account, I’ve created a board entitled “Small Living Room.” To that board, I’ve pinned loveseats, accent chairs and other décor that I think would work Continue reading...
