Celebrate National Bird Day

written by Lauren

national bird day, cardinal

My dad gave me a really great bird feeder for Christmas (thanks, Dad!), and I am hoping to put it up today, since it is National Bird Day! It is supposed to rain today, so that should make the ground nice and soft for getting my bird feeder and post into the ground. My dad has the same birdfeeder and pole, and he says it attracts lots of beautiful birds to his backyard. My birdfeeder, the Homestead Triple Bin Party Bird Feeder, looks great because it can feed large birds like cardinals and blue jays, and because it has three separate bins, so you can fill it with three separate seeds to Continue reading...

2013 Year in Review

written by Lauren

mom home guide, 2013, year in review

Happy 2014, everyone! I can't believe that 2013 is over! Last year was a busy one here at Mom Home Guide. So, before launching my new projects for 2014, I am going to share the best of what I accomplished in 2013! Here is my 2013 Mom Home Guide Year in Review. Burlap Crafts Burlap was popular in 2013, so like many crafters, I jumped onto the burlap bandwagon in 2013. It was fun! Two of my favorite burlap crafts I completed was my stenciled no-sew burlap valance for my home's downstairs powder room, and my no-sew fringed burlap table runner. Both projects were problem solvers, as I was having Continue reading...

Caramel Macchiato Tea

written by Lauren

coffee mate caramel macchiato tea

I am loving fall this year! The colors and the warmer than usual temperatures have been perfect this season. One thing I love to do in the fall is enjoy a warm beverage when I take in the fall scenery, whether it is during a hike through the woods or while sitting in my home's bay window enjoying a good book. So, when Coffee-Mate offered the opportunity to try out their new seasonal flavors, I jumped at the chance! Among Coffee Mates new seasonal flavors are Dark Chocolate Fudge, Peppermint Mocha and Eggnog Latte. Yum! I can't wait to try those out! Fall Tea Break This morning, I had Continue reading...

#BugOut Moments with Orkin

written by Lauren

orkin, black widow spider

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of The Orkin Ecologist for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine. This fall has been a buggy one in my home. In the past three months alone, my daughters and I have had several #BugOut moments. You know, the kind of moment when you see some kind of unwanted creepy, crawly critter in your house and scream! We discovered at least 5 spiders in our house! Yuck! The spiders we found weren’t tiny harmless ones, either. At least 3 of them were super dark and big! So scary! There is definitely some arachnophobia in my house! I don't know if the Continue reading...

Spooktacular Halloween Decorations

written by Lauren

Yesterday after school, my kids and I got into the Halloween spirit by putting up some Halloween decorations. My kids and I had so much fun together! On our front door I put up some pumpkin Halloween lights that my kids just adore. We then spread a gigantic cotton Halloween spider's web across the bushes in front of our house. My kids had fun stretching the web to cover as much as possible, and even pretended to be stuck in the web itself! Once our web was in place, we added a creepy big black spider to our Halloween decorations. Fun! Creepy Halloween Decor Now that my kids are older, Continue reading...

Time to Plant Spring Bulbs

written by Lauren

when to plant spring bulbs

This summer, I just adored the new perennial garden that I planted along the southern side of my home. The phlox and some of the lilies are still blooming, but the sunflowers are long gone. That's why today when the kids come home, I plan to enlist their help in planting some spring bulbs. Now is the perfect time to plant spring bulbs like daffodils and tulips, which bloom in the spring. Since it's necessary to plant spring bulbs in the fall before the soil freezes, I plan to get an early start by doing my planting today. I usually wait until October to plant my bulbs, but I've Continue reading...

Butterflies, Sunflowers and Ladybugs

written by Lauren

sunflower, garden

The past few days have been busy at Mom Home Guide! A lot happened over the weekend. One of the most exciting things that happened is that the Insect Lore butterflies and ladybugs that we ordered through the mail have started to come out of their metamorphoses! The first to emerge were a few ladybugs, and then two butterflies came out of their chrysalises. My kids are very excited! We are planning to release the butterflies and ladybugs in our new perennial garden when all the butterflies and ladybugs finally emerge  – which will probably be by next Continue reading...

DIY Bird Bath from a Clay Pot

written by Lauren

DIY, how to, bird bath, clay pot

It's been a few weeks since I planted my flower garden. Now that my garden is complete, I have been loving it! While the garden has been a haven for me, I've been hoping that the garden would also be a welcome place for birds as well. My kids and I love to bird watch! The garden has lots of phlox, which I've heard can attract hummingbirds. I would love that! Sunflowers are also said to attract birds. But although my sunflower plant is big, it hasn't flowered yet! I am hoping to get a sunflower or two soon!     DIY Bird Bath for the Garden I Continue reading...

Mason Jar Crafts

written by Lauren

mason jar picnic, craft

Mason jars are everywhere these days, and I love it! Mason jars are relatively inexpensive and are easy to find -- you can purchase mason jars online at Amazon.com, and they are even at my local Walmart. I've seen several mason jar crafts online that I would love to make for my home! Terrific Mason Jar Crafts I love when mason jars are paired with striped paper straws and are used at a picnic or for an outside gathering with family or friends. I just adore the mason jar picnic that is pictured at Your Home Based Mom! For the picnic she used mason jars for glasses, to hold tea Continue reading...
