Celebrate National Bird Day

written by Lauren

national bird day, cardinal

My dad gave me a really great bird feeder for Christmas (thanks, Dad!), and I am hoping to put it up today, since it is National Bird Day! It is supposed to rain today, so that should make the ground nice and soft for getting my bird feeder and post into the ground. My dad has the same birdfeeder and pole, and he says it attracts lots of beautiful birds to his backyard. My birdfeeder, the Homestead Triple Bin Party Bird Feeder, looks great because it can feed large birds like cardinals and blue jays, and because it has three separate bins, so you can fill it with three separate seeds to Continue reading...

Heart-Warming Good Reads

written by Lauren

book review, oher, schulz, gilbert, stayed

My! Is it chilly here! It is supposed to get to -4 degrees (that's NEGATIVE 4 - YIKES!) here in New Jersey tonight! I can’t remember another time EVER when it’s been that cold outside here! Weather like this just makes me want to snuggle under a throw on the couch and read a good book! I used to be strictly a fiction nut, but lately, I’ve been hooked on biographies and autobiographies. I guess it’s because I am always looking for lessons on how people traveled through life and found their successes. These are a few interesting ones I’ve read recently, if you are looking for a good Continue reading...

Snow Day Activities

written by Lauren

snow day, activities, kids

It's snowing hard here in New Jersey, and with the local schools already closed for tomorrow, that means that area kids should have a fun snow day tomorrow! So, I've been browsing Pinterest for fun snow day activities for the kids. If you are looking for snow activities for your kids tomorrow and over the weekend, check out these fun ideas! Stacy at Not Just a Housewife has a tutorial on how to make snow paints and dyes for the kids out of food coloring. I don't have any food coloring in the house, but I do have some Kool-Aid, so I might have to try making our dyes out of Kool-Aid Continue reading...

2013 Year in Review

written by Lauren

mom home guide, 2013, year in review

Happy 2014, everyone! I can't believe that 2013 is over! Last year was a busy one here at Mom Home Guide. So, before launching my new projects for 2014, I am going to share the best of what I accomplished in 2013! Here is my 2013 Mom Home Guide Year in Review. Burlap Crafts Burlap was popular in 2013, so like many crafters, I jumped onto the burlap bandwagon in 2013. It was fun! Two of my favorite burlap crafts I completed was my stenciled no-sew burlap valance for my home's downstairs powder room, and my no-sew fringed burlap table runner. Both projects were problem solvers, as I was having Continue reading...

Hey, everyone! I can't believe that we will be soon ringing in the New Year! I am looking forward to spending some fun times with my family and friends this New Year's Eve. Are you looking for family friendly ways to celebrate the New Year? Then check out this post that I wrote for New Jersey Family, where I am a Real Moms of NJ contributor. Family-Friendly New Year's Eve Celebrations New Year’s Eve isn’t often thought of as a family friendly celebration, but it can be. Since my kids have been born, my husband and I have always celebrated New Year’s Eve with our daughters, now both 10. If Continue reading...

Holiday Baking Learn and Conserve Challenge #2

written by Lauren

black, decker, toaster oven, convection

As you might know, I am participating in the Learn and Conserve Challenge friendly competition with several other local bloggers. My first post for this series was on winterizing the home to save energy – and cash – over the winter months. Thanks to NRG Residential Solutions, I’ve learned that winterizing the home doesn’t have to be difficult or cost a lot of money! Now that NRG’s Ambassadors are on our second challenge, we have the task of cooking without our ovens and microwaves as much as we can for the next two weeks. This is a tough challenge, as it falls right in the holiday baking Continue reading...

Winter Getaway – #Marriott

written by Lauren

spa, towel, flowers, pool

When winter rolls around here in New Jersey, I start longing for a getaway from the winter's cold weather and dark nights. I've found that quick winter getaways are a great way to chase away the winter blues! But because I don't have a big budget, I can never go away very far on my winter getaways. But that doesn't matter, because my friends and family have discovered that even booking just an overnight or two at a local Marriott can be a lot of fun! Ring in the New Year In past years, my family and two other families on our block have celebrated the New Year at a local Marriott. The Continue reading...

Scrapbook Paper Gift Tags

written by Lauren

scallop, scissor, scrapbook, paper, gift tag

I am a big scrapbooker and have been working feverishly to get this year's scrapbook of family photos completed! Since scrapbook paper is so pretty, I always save my paper scraps in case I can use them for something someday. Well, while watching the finale of The Voice with my daughters last night on TV, I figured out how to use all those scraps -- I converted some of them into pretty scrapbook gift tags for all the gifts I have yet to wrap! (LOL) With only three days of school left before the winter holiday, I decided to let my kids bring in their teacher gifts today -- but we needed Continue reading...

Winterize Your Home – #LearnandConserve

written by Lauren

save, energy, winter, home

Cold weather has hit New Jersey early this year. In my area, we’ve already have had snow (and one school snow day!), and the temps have been dipping way below freezing at night. I think we are going to have a cold winter this year! So, I am excited to be participating in the NRG Residential Solutions Learn & ConserveSM Blogger Challenge. Through the program, I will be learning how to conserve and reduce energy use in my home, and will be competing against local bloggers to see who can conserve the most amount of energy through January. I've always been interested in reducing my home's Continue reading...

The Christmas Pickle – A Fun Holiday Tradition

written by Lauren

christmas pickle ornament

This holiday season, I have been into creating new Christmas traditions for my kids. Just a few days ago, we started using our new decorated advent gift boxes to count down until Christmas -- my daughters have been having so much fun opening the boxes each morning to find little treats and surprises for them nestled inside! Christmas Pickle Ornament Yesterday, I was in a local dollar store and was very happy to find glass pickle ornaments for just $1 each! I've heard of the tradition of hiding a glass pickle ornament in the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, and have always been curious about Continue reading...
